Brushless motors

Thrust, efficiency, and thermal behaviour under a real mission profile.

Motor selection is not a size decision. It is a match between the efficiency band the motor actually operates in and the mission profile the aircraft flies. A motor chosen on peak thrust will usually cruise outside its efficient region for the entire flight.

01Deciding parameters

The figures that actually decide selection — and why.

KV

rpm/V

Sets the usable prop and voltage window — not a quality ranking.

Peak vs continuous thrust

kgf

Peak is a marketing number; continuous is the design number.

Efficiency

g/W

Endurance is decided here, at cruise throttle, not at full throttle.

Thermal rise

°C

Rarely published. Determines whether continuous rating survives ambient.

Mass

g

Compounds — every gram is paid for again in pack size.

02Where it is used

Application changes the answer.

  • Multirotor UAV — thrust-to-weight and cruise efficiency set endurance
  • Industrial UAV — thermal stability under sustained load outranks peak specification
  • Fixed-wing / VTOL — two operating regimes on one motor, each with its own efficiency band
  • Heavy-lift — continuous current and derating margin dominate selection

03Decision drivers

What the choice actually turns on.

  • Thrust-to-weight target against endurance target — these trade directly
  • KV against propeller diameter against pack voltage, as one coupled choice
  • Continuous current handling at ambient, not at 25 °C bench conditions
  • Efficiency across the actual throttle band flown, not at peak
  • Bearing and magnet quality as the real driver of service life

04What we hold

The intelligence behind this category.

Manufacturer versus authorised channel versus reseller, held apart

SKU-level thrust, efficiency, and power characteristics on one basis

Cross-validation of published thrust tables against independent test data

Test conditions recovered where a datasheet omits them

Pricing bands, MOQ patterns, and OEM overlap across brands

05What to watch for

Where selection in this category turns.

01

Selecting on maximum thrust rather than the efficiency band at cruise

02

Ignoring ESC, propeller, and pack compatibility as a coupled system

03

Treating a thrust table without stated test conditions as evidence

04

Buying from a reseller under the impression it is the manufacturer

05

Assuming a continuous rating holds at operating ambient temperature

Beyond this page

SKU-level intelligence sits behind the requirement.

Validated supplier records, per-SKU parameter data, pricing bands, MOQ patterns, and lead-time history for brushless motors are released against a stated application — because a shortlist is only meaningful once the operating conditions are known.

06Coupled decisions in drone components

Motor · ESC · propeller · pack are selected as one set. Selecting any one of these without the others is the most common source of rework in this domain.
